Maps or Magnets?

Humans have been captivated by a pigeons ability to “home” for quite some time now. For much of that time we have relied on the theory that pigeons find their ways to and from their homes relying on signals from the earth’s magnetic fields. However, new research is pointing those theories in an entirely new direction, the direction of maps! Researchers at the University of Zurich have obtained new data that suggests that pigeons rely on a spatial mapping technique to home and not on the earth’s magnetic field.
