Don’t feed the birds, you could get fined.

Dec 08, 2017

On Tuesday, November 7th, Clark County Nevada commissioners voted to ban people from feeding the pigeons to help control the population. If caught you could pay a fine of up to a thousand dollars or go to jail for up to six months. The county tried to pass this ordinance 5 years ago, but it was met with heavy scrutiny and opposition from pigeon lovers. Finally Las Vegas residents and commercial properties who are inundated with pigeons will be able to report neighbors that are openly feeding pigeons. Up until this time they had no recourse.

Much like feeding feral cats, once you start feeding pigeons the increase in numbers coming for food can become overwhelming and pigeons won’t leave unless a food source is removed. Feeding the birds has fueled the pigeon population we see in local parks and neighborhoods.

This new ban may help decrease the pigeon population over time, however there are still multiple food sources such as grass seed found in parks and on golf courses, restaurant dumpsters, fruits and seeds from vegetation such as african sumacs or olive trees, and dog and cat food bowls left outside. Its a step in the right direction, but businesses and homeowners will still have an abundance of nesting and roosting issues that you can contact us to help resolve such as pigeon cleanup and pigeon control.
