Can pigeon poop cause damage to my roof?

Sep 04, 2018

If you have a pigeon problem than you already know how unsightly it is to have bird droppings on the roof. Not only is it unsightly, but pigeon feces can cause permanent damage to the roof. If left untreated the bird droppings will weaken the roof and can cause roof leaks. If your skeptical watch this scientific experiment on how pigeon feces can weaken your roof here.

Pigeon droppings are highly acidic and will stain or corrode building and roofing materials over time. Pigeons nest inside of their feces which is so acidic it will actually discolor roofing tiles and bleach them white. The tiles will need co  mplete replacement once damaged. Even if you remove a nesting flock of pigeons the stained tiles create a bullseye for new pigeons overhead. New curious pigeons will see that bullseye and the pigeon problem will start all over again.

It is imperative to solve a pigeon problem as soon as you realize they are roosting and/or nesting on your property. The longer you wait the more pigeons will reproduce which can lead to a more severe problem. If you find yourself in a situation where the pigeons have stained the roof tiles we have found the best way to solve this problem is by having us clean the roof and then hiring a licensed roofer to replace the tiles. We can then follow up and install pigeon control deterrents to prevent you from having this problem again.
