Most people that we speak to when evaluating their properties think that pigeons are incredibly dumb when in fact it’s the exact opposite. Several studies have shown that pigeons are so smart that they can do math and some test higher than an average 3 year old which you can read about here. You can also read here about how pigeons can even recognize people who are nice or mean to them. If you are the person that throws trash in a dumpster and leaves the lid wide open than pigeons will love you. If you like to feed your dog outside in the morning at a certain time pigeons will figure that out too. Luckily they aren’t smarter than the humans at Pigeons Be Gone.

Pigeon droppings are highly acidic and will stain or corrode building and roofing materials over time. Pigeons nest inside of their feces which is so acidic it will actually discolor roofing tiles and bleach them white. The tiles will need co mplete replacement once damaged. Even if you remove a nesting flock of pigeons the stained tiles create a bullseye for new pigeons overhead. New curious pigeons will see that bullseye and the pigeon problem will start all over again.

It is imperative to solve a pigeon problem as soon as you realize they are roosting and/or nesting on your property. The longer you wait the more pigeons will reproduce which can lead to a more severe problem. If you find yourself in a situation where the pigeons have stained the roof tiles we have found the best way to solve this problem is by having us clean the roof and then hiring a licensed roofer to replace the tiles. We can then follow up and install pigeon control deterrents to prevent you from having this problem again.

Pigeons nest inside of their own feces which will tend to build up over time. Their feces is the perfect insulation to keep their eggs cool in our extremely hot Las Vegas summers and warm in the winters. This disgusting, but ingenious way of building nests can help just 2 mating pigeons reproduce to 16 in a calendar year. We recommend removing their nests before they can reproduce to a small flock of 6-8. If they are left to reproduce the only way to remove even a small flock of 6-8 or more is through a humane trapping program. One of the major issues with allowing pigeons to nest on your property is that there are over 60 different diseases that pigeons and their feces can carry. This is especially worrisome

When most people think about pigeon control their minds typically go to pigeons nesting on a house or commercial property and the measures taken to prevent this from occurring again in the future. The issue with pigeons is that they can roost and nest almost anywhere that flight will take them. Meaning, they will nest wherever they can find shelter, even on an aircraft carrier, the Statue of Liberty, or the Golden Gate Bridge. Since 1998 we’ve been offering the highest level of pigeon control and pigeon removal to our clients along The Strip and across the greater Las Vegas Valley. However, a recent contract posed a new set of challenges, something different than anything we’ve tackled before. We were thrilled when the folks at Tony Hsieh’s Downtown Project contacted us with the challenge of keeping pigeons off of a world famous art installation in downtown Las Vegas. The

It has been featured at Coachella, Burning Man, Life is Beautiful, and even in the U.K. for Banksy’s Dismaland Show. As beautiful and unique as it is, all of its nooks and crannies make it an ideal place for pigeons to roost and nest. The challenge is how to keep pigeons off this one of a kind sculpture without installing bird spikes or bird netting which would take away from the aesthetic appeal. In an effort not to compromise the artist original structure, we decided to not add anything to this piece of art, but to trap and humanely remove the pigeons when necessary.

Every day home owners, restaurants, businesses, and government agencies spent thousands of dollars on pigeon control services which remove nests and debris from properties as well as install measures to keep pigeons away. Pigeons nest inside of their feces which may sound super gross to you, but its and ingenious way that pigeons can insulate their eggs by keeping them cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Pigeon droppings are acidic and can quickly erode roofing materials and other structures. The longer you wait to remove pigeons the more pigeon dropping buildup there can be causing an even larger problem which will cost you more money. Pigeons also can reproduce at an extremely fast rate of 2 to 16 in one years time. Pigeons are also known to carry 60 different diseases which can be found in their feces so be careful cleaning up pigeon feces on your own. These diseases are especially harmful to children and any individuals with compromised immune systems. We highly recommend that you hire a professional when dealing with pigeons to get it right the first time. We only use the longest lasting materials in the business and are the only pigeon control company in Las Vegas to say we’ve offered a lifetime guarantee on our screening products for the last 20 years. We send pigeons packing for good.

Pigeon droppings are extremely acidic and have been known to eat through steel and most roofing materials if not cleaned periodically. To eliminate accumulation of droppings the site is first brush cleaned to eliminate the bulk of the droppings. The area is then pressure washed & special enzymatic disinfectants are applied, breaking down the remainder of the droppings. These products are non-toxic, environmentally safe, non-flammable & biodegradable.

When pigeon poison is administer via a tainted food source to solve a pigeon problem. All different kinds of birds from the surrounding area are attracted. Once a bird eats the tainted food it becomes violently ill and can sometimes die. This is evident to the other birds who will steer clear of the tainted food source and avoid it all together in the future. Pigeons that have avoided the food source will continue to nest and reproduce on that property. Birds who have ingested the poison rarely expire at the poisoning site. This leaves infinite possibilities as to where the carcass ends up. Unfortunately, cases of humans and domestic animals who have had contact with tainted birds becoming ill and/or dying have been documented. Pigeons Be Gone’s

On Tuesday, November 7th, Clark County Nevada commissioners voted to ban people from feeding the pigeons to help control the population. If caught you could pay a fine of up to a thousand dollars or go to jail for up to six months. The county tried to pass this ordinance 5 years ago, but it was met with heavy scrutiny and opposition from pigeon lovers. Finally Las Vegas residents and commercial properties who are inundated with pigeons will be able to report neighbors that are openly feeding pigeons. Up until this time they had no recourse.

Much like feeding feral cats, once you start feeding pigeons the increase in numbers coming for food can become overwhelming and pigeons won’t leave unless a food source is removed. Feeding the birds has fueled the pigeon population we see in local parks and neighborhoods.

This new ban may help decrease the pigeon population over time, however there are still multiple food sources such as grass seed found in parks and on golf courses, restaurant dumpsters, fruits and seeds from vegetation such as african sumacs or olive trees, and dog and cat food bowls left outside. Its a step in the right direction, but businesses and homeowners will still have an abundance of nesting and roosting issues that you can contact us to help resolve such as pigeon cleanup and pigeon control.

Getting rid of pigeons can be very difficult because pigeons breed very rapidly and their numbers are determined by how much food is available to them. So if more food is provided they will breed more often. Some pigeon control companies use pigeon poison to help eliminate flocks of pigeons. When pigeons are poisoned the surviving pigeons will not leave the area. A successful pigeon poisoning program will only poison 50% of a flock which means the survivors are left with more food per bird for them. This can encourage more breeding and also attract pigeons from outside areas to that area. Pigeon control companies that use poison usually will offer monthly or quarterly programs which means the pigeons will always have a steady food source. The use of pigeon poison has been proven to be highly ineffective in the long term, especially after repeated use and once pigeons realize that a food source is tainted and their family members are dying after eating it.

A better and more successful way of getting rid of pigeons is by introducing a new food source on the roof and trapping and physically removing an entire flock of pigeons. Successful pigeon removal also requires helping our customers completely eliminate food sources such as dog food or bird feeders in the future. Pigeon trapping programs can usually be completed in 30-45 days. Once the program is completed the trap and food source is removed from the roof which makes it less inviting for new pigeons to want to nest in that area again.

Pigeon feces can do some serious damage!

If you haven’t had pigeon cleanup and removal done before, you might be amazed by the amount of damage pigeon feces can do to a roof in a short amount of time if allowed to accumulate.

If you haven’t had pigeon cleanup and removal done before, you might be amazed by the amount of damage pigeon feces can do to a roof in a short amount of time if allowed to accumulate. Most reputable roofing contractors will recommend to have the roof inspected for slipped or broken tiles every three years as well as pigeon cleanup and removal. Pigeons will nest anywhere that they can find shade and shelter and broken or slipped tiles provide just what they are looking for. Pigeons nest inside of their feces because it insulates their eggs and keeps them cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Unfortunately pigeons will continue to add pigeon droppings to their nest. If the nest is allowed to build up over time it will eventually eat through the paper underlayment and cause roof leaks because bird poop is high in urea. The other issue with pigeon dropping accumulation is that it creates a dam on the roof and won’t allow water to flow properly. On flat roofs and gas station canopies this has been known to cause collapse when drains have been blocked.

Pigeons Be Gone pulled the tiles on the roof pictured and removed the feces trapped underneath so that roofers could come and safely fix the leaks caused by pigeon debris. The pigeon cleanup and removal included approximately 750 lbs. of roof debris and feces. Unfortunately the feces buildup had gone on so long that the pigeon feces ate through the sheet metal which allowed water to flow off of the roof and cost the homeowner thousands of dollars in repairs.

Our previous post explained the difference between pigeon removal and pigeon control which can be read here . With that understanding, we can move on to determining which of these bird solutions, or combination of solutions you need. We always start by asking a potential customer two questions:

How long have the pigeons been nesting or roosting on your property?

How many pigeons do you typically see?

If they’ve lived there for six months or more and you see 6-8 pigeons or more, we know you will need pigeon removal. Two pigeons can multiply to 16 in a year’s time. If a property is left untreated, pigeons can reproduce to a very large number in a short period of time. What makes removing pigeons so difficult is that they have a homing instinct. Meaning, wherever they were born they will continue to flock and live until they are permanently removed with a pigeon trapping program which is explained

           .

If a potential customer states that the pigeon problem began within the last 3 months and is only seeing 2-3 pigeons, we suggest pigeon control methods such as bird netting, bird spikes, pigeon mesh or pigeon screening explained here . These methods are highly effective when the pigeon problem is addressed in a timely manner. If the issue has not been caught early, we would likely suggest pigeon removal to eliminate the nesting flock, followed by pigeon control to prevent future pigeon problems.

We provide customized solutions based on these issues. Contact us to find out what the best solution for your pigeon problem is.

What is the difference between pigeon control and pigeon removal?

is pest control for pigeons by modifying your property to deny pigeons the ability to nest or roost. This is most effectively done with the use of pigeon deterrents or bird control products such as bird netting, bird spikes, pigeon mesh or screening. Denying access can change a pigeons behavior and if the problem is caught early enough, the birds will look for a new home. Bird netting, bird spikes, and pigeon mesh or screening are also guaranteed to work if installed properly and in a timely manner in conjunction with pigeon nest removal, cleaning and a disinfecting process. There are also many bird control products like bird repellent, fake owls and snakes, bird deterrent tape, scary eyes, ultra sonic pigeon repellents and many more that are highly ineffective. These products are not guaranteed by the manufacturer or an option Pigeons Be Gone would suggest to rid a property of pigeons. In the case of bird gel it can do more harm than good by staining your roof. When winds pick up, debris carried through the air gets stuck permanently in the bird gel. At that point, the only way to remove the gel is by replacing stained tiles on the roof. See example here.

            Pigeon removal

is the use of humane pigeon traps to remove a pigeon infestation. Pigeon trapping is used when pigeons have been left to reproduce on a property and have exceeded a small flock or 6-8 birds. Pigeons have a homing instinct and will continue to reproduce on the property that they were born on until removed. When addressing a medium to large flock, pigeon trapping is the first step in effectively ridding a property of pigeons. After the birds are removed, pigeon control methods should be implemented to prevent future pigeon infestations.

StealthNet Bird Netting – Pigeon Prevention

Large, recessed areas are often hospitable areas for pigeons to roost and nest. Many times the birds will seek the shade and/or warmth that roof mounted A/C unit provides in these areas. We have found the application of pigeon netting in these areas to be most effective.

Pigeon netting provides the most permanent, low visibility solution for pigeons that are nesting around and/or under air conditioning units. Pigeon netting is the most versatile bird exclusion and pigeon nest prevention product offered as it can be customized to fit any size area and is easily accessible to service people. Made of UV resistant polyethylene twine, the net will last for 5 years when properly maintained. Zippers can also be added to the net allowing access in areas the netting can’t be removed. This is the best option for commercial properties that have a parapet on the roof which provides shade. The netting will eliminate the shady areas which pushes the pigeons out into the elements and makes the pigeons look elsewhere for shelter. This is pigeon control in a nutshell.

When doing Las Vegas pigeon control and pigeon removal we at Pigeons Be Gone have been on countless estimates where pigeon poison was intentionally left on the roof by a previous company for a pigeon problem. What those companies didn’t realize is that pigeons have the ability to recognize a tainted food source when their family members eat it and die. They also have the ability to share that information with the rest of their flock so that future generations won’t ever go to that food source again, but will remain on the property. This ability to improve on knowledge over generations is known as cumulative culture which is found only in humans, primates and pigeons.

Homeless pigeons around the Las Vegas Valley have finally found their dream homes! For the last several years, more than 15,000 homes have had solar panels installed on their roofs. And while that means great things for Mother Earth, the panels also draw pesky pigeons and their destructive droppings. The panels provide a safe environment from overhead flying predators as well as a shady place for their offspring to flourish which in Las Vegas can be difficult to find due to our extreme summer temperatures.

The amount of power a panel can produce is directly related to the intensity of sunlight that reaches the panels internal crystals. When pigeons decide to nest under the panels, bird droppings can build up over time and greatly reduce the amount of electricity generated by the module. Pigeon feces will allow less light to reach the crystals which results in a less efficient panel and lower power output. Not only can the pigeon debris build up on top of the panel, but the majority of the nesting materials are underneath the panels. Over time, this accumulation of their corrosive droppings can cause roof leaks when feces become trapped underneath the panels, creating a dam effect where rain water can’t flow properly off of the roof. The acidic nature of bird droppings will destroy not only the solar panels and electrical devices, but roofing materials as well.

Pigeons Be Gone can remove the nesting materials, pressure wash, and disinfect the areas where pigeons have been nesting. After cleaning, a pigeon deterrent such as pigeon screening, bird spikes, or bird netting would be installed around the solar panels. Screens are hand cut to fit in the peaks and valleys of your roof and are attached with clips instead of screwing into the panel which could void your panels warranties.

Pigeons often build their nests near drains and inside of gutters which can lead to bird poop eating through the roof without proper maintenance. One pigeon can produce up to 25 lbs. of poop a year and will nest inside of their own feces. Pigeon feces left to accumulate can destroy and/or weaken any structure including concrete and steel due to the high concentration of acidic properties within their waste. Without regular cleaning the pigeon droppings will accumulate over time clogging drains and adding weight to roofs, canopies, and other structures. When water is added through precipitation the problem can cause roofs and gas station canopies to collapse. Read about one instance in northern California

In severe cases where a building has been overrun by a flock of pigeons we always recommend pigeon abatement by removing pigeons with a trapping program first. Pigeon trapping is the most effective way of pigeon removal and keeping the pigeon population under control. After we get rid of pigeons that are roosting or nesting we will pressure wash and disinfect the areas making them safe for its occupants. The last step is to install steel screening, pigeon netting, or stainless steel bird spikes to prevent future pigeon nesting or roosting on the structure.

The trait that makes this kind of activity possible is a pigeon's homing instinct…the ability to fly hundreds of miles from home and still find your way home. This trait is the same instinct that leads to pigeons nesting on the same building for their entire lives unless removed using a service like Pigeons Be Gone.

The reason why these methods won’t work is because pigeons are super smart, observant, and extremely persistent. If you look at the bottom of those fake owls it will say “for maximum effectiveness, move the owl every two to three days”. That’s because pigeons are smart enough to realize if it’s not moving it's not real and to be honest there are so many of these fake owls up around Las Vegas they are used to seeing them and know they won’t cause any harm.

Humans have been captivated by a pigeons ability to “home” for quite some time now. For much of that time we have relied on the theory that pigeons find their ways to and from their homes relying on signals from the earth’s magnetic fields. However, new research is pointing those theories in an entirely new direction, the direction of maps! Researchers at the University of Zurich have obtained new data that suggests that pigeons rely on a spatial mapping technique to home and not on the earth’s magnetic field.

Opinions about pigeons vary far and wide. Many people enjoy watching and even feeding the birds. However, in the City of Henderson, roosting and/or lingering pigeons have been added to the local municipal code and listed as a public nuisance.

While Henderson also refers to “offending the aesthetic senses by pigeon contamination,” the threats posed by pigeons to humans, companion animals, homes and businesses are much greater. In our 15 years of providing pigeon control to property owners throughout the Las Vegas valley, we have come in contact with people who have become ill due to exposure to pigeon excrement and have seen the acidic dropping literally eat through tile roofing materials.

Keeping our properties free of these nuisance birds is in the best interest of all within our community. So, we advise our customers and readers to refrain from using bird feeders and baths, bring in the food bowls if you feed your animals outside and maintain any fruiting trees and/or bushes you may have to reduce the chances of pigeons taking up residency at your home or business.

New research has shown that feral, untrained pigeons can recognize individual people and are not fooled by a change of clothes. Researchers have shown that urban pigeons that have never been caught or handled can recognize individuals, probably by using facial characteristics.

In a park in Paris city centre, pigeons were fed by two researchers, of similar build and skin colour, wearing different coloured lab coats. One individual simply ignored the pigeons, allowing them to feed while the other was hostile, and chased them away. This was followed by a second session when neither chased away the pigeons. The experiment, which was repeated several times, showed that pigeons were able to recognize the individuals and continued to avoid the researcher who had chased them away even when they no longer did so. Swapping lab coats during the experiments did not confuse the pigeons and they continued to shun the researcher who had been initially hostile. “It is very likely that the pigeons recognized the researchers by their faces, since the individuals were both female and of a similar age, build and skin colour,” says Dr. Dalila Bovet a co-author of this work from the University of Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense. “Interestingly, the pigeons, without training, spontaneously used the most relevant characteristics of the individuals (probably facial traits), instead of the lab coats that covered 90% of the body.” The fact that the pigeons appeared to know that clothing colour was not a good way of telling humans apart suggests that the birds have developed abilities to discriminate between humans in particular. This specialized ability may have come about over the long period of association with humans, from early domestication to many years of living in cities.

When is trapping necessary to rid my property of pigeons?

If you don’t solve your pigeon problem in a timely manner (within 2-3 months) the nesting pigeons will multiply to a small flock of 6-8 pigeons. At this point, pigeon control methods like screening and spikes won’t be enough to move them off of your property.

Our competitors installed preventative screens and spikes without addressing the small flock of pigeons living on this property. Pigeon removal is necessary when 6-8+ pigeons are nesting on a property.

If you don’t solve your pigeon problem in a timely manner (within 2-3 months) the nesting pigeons will multiply to a small flock of 6-8 pigeons. At this point, pigeon control methods like screening and spikes won’t be enough to move them off of your property. The birds will find another place on your roof that provides shelter like underneath your tiles or they may just nest out in the open without any shelter. For an example of this, see our video titled, “What do pigeons and foreclosures have in common?”

In one year a pair of nesting pigeons can reproduce to 16. Pigeons do NOT migrate, so once they are on your property they aren’t leaving unless you physically remove them by using a pigeon removal method such as trapping. Pigeons living in Southe rn Nevada are known as feral pigeons and have the same instincts as homing pigeons. This means that if the pigeons on your property are trapped, removed, and released, even at a far away location, they have the ability to return to your property.

Hopefully you’ve been able to catch your pigeon problem within the first few months. If not we will most likely recommend a pigeon removal program such as trapping to completely remove the nesting flock from your property. After the pigeons have been removed, we can clean the roof and install screening or spikes to prevent future nesting.

Residential Eave Before and After Pigeon Screening

Many homes are built with eaves, small shady areas on the roof that are ideal places for pigeons to nest. To prevent this, Pigeons Be Gone uses a heavy gauge steel screening material that is custom fit to the affected area(s) and painted to match the color of your home. This method allows for an aesthetically pleasing look that prevents pigeons from nesting in the treated area for the lifetime of the building, GUARANTEED!

At this residential property, Pigeons Be Gone was once again called in to effectively stop birds from nesting. As you can see in the picture, a competitor had installed spikes in an eave where pigeons were nesting. The pigeons, undeterred by the spikes, built a new nest on top of the spikes and continued to make a mess of this roof. In cases like this, we have found pigeon screening to be the most effective measure in eliminating this issue permanently.

All of our screening is done with a heavy gauge steel material, painted to increase obscurity and guaranteed to keep pigeons from nesting within the treated area for the lifetime of the building.

This photo illustrates the application of our heavy-duty 14 gauge galvanized steel screening to an extraordinarily long eave area after all droppings and debris were removed. The screening has been painted to match the color of the building making it aesthetically pleasing as well as durable. With the application of this product, Pigeons Be Gone is proud to offer a lifetime guarantee. We guarantee pigeons will never re-nest within the treated areas for the life of the building.
